To get the most out of your data in Geoserver, you have to properly configure the coordinate reference system the data is provided into.
Depending on the kind of data, configuration may be simple, or very complex.
Sometimes Geoserver can figure out an EPSG number by inspecting your data, sometimes it can't, sometime your data does not have CRS information at all.
